| Why I Am
Interested In Energy Efficiency. |
Energy is relatively expensive but will become more
costly in the future. Therefore we should all use energy as efficiently as possible. To
help in this use our POWER USEAGE COSTING TABLES
to calculate the annual running costs of various types of equipment.
Reducing your power account can be as simple as turning off machines or lights when they
are not needed. More likely it is power factor,
time when you use the most energy, upgrading to more energy efficient equipment, and
choosing the tariff best suited to your needs. It may even mean changing your Power
Company.
I firmly believe that energy efficiency will become more important in the near future. We
have seen Electric producers nearly run out of Hydro Power in 1992 and 2001, And demand
for electricity is still increasing. I would not be at all surprised if we see the same
problems again in the future.
Written in most power compnies conditions of supply is a requirement for an installation
to have a power factor of 0.95. (Most factories are less than this). If this is not met a
power company reserves the right to charge for all reactive units, at say, $0.083 per
reactive unit. (Reactive units are the units of waste power you create.) This is an extra
charge that at present they generally don't implement. It will only be a matter of time
before Electric producers force power compnies to become more efficient, and I am sure
they will get a lot tougher with inefficient commercial clients. In saying this the now
used time of use metering is based on kVA which means you now pay for that wastage.
I believe energy efficient technologies are fast becoming one of the major growth areas
within the electrical industry as we all strive to get best value for money from our
electrical energy.
| Important
Requirements For Effective Energy Management. |
Total commitment of senior management and full
staff co-operation is vital for a successful energy efficiency program. (If necessary
appoint an Energy Management Manager.)
Do a thorough energy survey. Analyse results, e.g. Where, why and how much energy is used
in each part of the plant.
List inefficient areas, implementing changes to processes or modifications to machinery to
improve energy product efficiency. Involve all staff in this as they may be able to
identify areas or process changes to make them more productive. Encourage a "Work
smarter, not harder" attitude.
Monitor results and institute regular energy maintenance checks.
